چکیده

n J Am Med Inform Assoc. 1998;5:511–527. A clinical patient record needs to store several thousand possible facts for patients across all specialties. For any given patient, however, the number of actual findings may not exceed a few dozen. A conventional (‘‘orthodox’’) database table design (one fact per column) is unsuitable for such data, because of database vendor limitations on the number of columns per table and the need to continually add new tables or columns whenever new facts need incorporation. Most mainstream electronic patient record systems (EPRSs) deal with this problem through the entity–attribute– value (EAV) representation. In this methodology (also referred to as row modeling), the fact descriptors (attributes) are treated as data, so that the addition of new facts does not make database restructuring necAffiliation of the authors: Yale University, New Haven, Con-

Application of Information Technology: Data Extraction and Ad Hoc Query of an Entity - Attribute - Value Database

Entity--attribute--value (EAV) tables form the major component of several mainstream electronic patient record systems (EPRSs). Such systems have been optimized for real-time retrieval of individual patient data. Data warehousing, on the other hand, involves cross-patient data retrieval based on values of patient attributes, with a focus on ad hoc query. Attribute-centric query is inherently mo...

Entity Attribute Value Style Modeling Approach for Archetype Based Data

Entity Attribute Value (EAV) storage model is extensively used to manage healthcare data in existing systems, however it lacks search efficiency. This study examines an entity attribute value style modeling approach for standardized Electronic Health Records (EHRs) database. It sustains qualities of EAV (i.e., handling sparseness and frequent schema evolution) and provides better performance fo...

Temporal query of attribute-value patient data: utilizing the constraints of clinical studies

We describe an interface and architecture for ad hoc temporal query of TrialDB, a clinical study data management system (CSDMS). A clinical study focuses primarily on the effect of therapy on a group of patients, who have individually enrolled in a study at different times. Relative times (chronological offsets from the time of enrollment) are therefore more useful than absolute times when coll...

ChronicleDB: A High-Performance Event Store

Reactive security monitoring, self-driving cars, the Internet of Things (IoT) and many other novel applications require systems for both writing events arriving at very high and fluctuating rates to persistent storage as well as supporting analytical ad-hoc queries. As standard database systems are not capable to deliver the required write performance, logbased systems, key-value stores and oth...

Reconciling Continuous Attribute Values from Multiple Data Sources

Because of the heterogeneous nature of different data sources, data integration is often one of the most challenging tasks in managing modern information systems. The challenges exist at three different levels: schema heterogeneity, entity heterogeneity, and data heterogeneity. The existing literature has largely focused on schema heterogeneity and entity heterogeneity; and the very limited wor...
